Immanuel’s Music and Arts Camp
Electives

Electives provide some fun options for campers!

Pair 1

Rhythms of Africa and the Caribbean

Learn about and experience the diverse rhythms and movements of Afro-Caribbean dance! The class will focus on traditional rhythms and Afrobeats dance from Nigeria and Ghana, as well as popular styles such as Salsa, which incorporates African and Caribbean rhythms. The class will be led by experienced instructors who are passionate about both dance and cultural expression, and children will have the opportunity to learn exciting routines that will help them develop strength, endurance, and flexibility, all while having fun and making new friends.

Painting

Grab a paint brush and start creating!  This class is designed for all abilities, taught by a SPPS Fine Arts teacher, Kelly Bustos, who has experience teaching K-8th grade.  Students will learn about color theory, and with step-by-step instruction, will sketch out ideas and bring their masterpieces to life. Each day will have a different theme, inspired by a famous artist or style.

Pair 2

Ukulele

Music teacher, Katie Kirschmann, from the Laura Jeffery Academy, joins the IMAC staff to teach Ukuele.  Students will have an opportunity to learn alongside one another in a group setting to play songs from a variety of genres such as blues, folk, rock and pop. They will learn how to count beats and transition between chords to follow simple patterns which make up 100’s of songs. These skills are transferable to their own learning should they decide to continue with the ukulele or another fretted instrument. Differentiated instruction will allow beginners to feel successful, as well provide challenges to those who have played before, so that everyone can learn and grow!

Japanese (Saori) Weaving

In Japanese (Saori) Weaving the students will create beautiful weavings on looms that are easy to use.  They will weave with as many colors and textures as they want. Weaving is very relaxing, mediative, and fun! Students will be able to create a wall hanging, a scarf, a table runner, or a blanket for your stuffed animals.  It is fun to work with your hands and create something "one-of-a-kind."  If you have some materials, you'd like to use for your projects such as strips of fabric/old t-shirts, feathers, ribbons.... You are welcome to bring them!

Pair 3

Handbells

Handbells is the ultimate musical team activity! In this class we will work on not only your own musical abilities but also how to function as a group through making music. Led by a veteran elementary music teacher and frequent twin cities area handbell clinician,  Darin Riedel, campers will learn about handbells, how to ring them and play some awesome heavy (and light!) metal music where every camper is critical to the result. Basic rhythm reading is helpful but not a required skill for this class.

Collage

Veteran art teacher, Ellen Ferrari is back to teach collage!  Explore collage while you create a whole artwork from many individual pieces!   Work with paper, wood, mixed media, seeds and fabric.  Find inspiration in the paper collages of Henri Matisse and Romare Bearden; wood collages of George Morrison and Louise Nevelson; mosaics of Gloria Gildersleeve and the Minnesota Mosaic Society; seed artworks of “The Seed Queen” Lillian Colton; and the quilts of Carol Corn and the Minnesota Historical Society.
